September – October: How to Settle the Mind – Advice from the Great Meditator Saraha

6-week series
COST:  $15 per class, $72 per series, free for members

In this series we will explore the advice of the great Mahamudra meditation master, Saraha, from the 8th Century, as transmitted by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in the book Clear Light of Bliss. Given in the form of a series of beautiful and practical analogies, we will learn, and train in, how to settle the mind into our special object, the clarity of the mind.

The meditation on the clarity of the mind is the foundational meditation in the development of what is called “Mahamudra”. Mahamudra, meaning the union of the mind of great bliss and emptiness, is the principal goal of our meditation training. Once we develop a fully qualified experience of Mahamudra we will attain enlightenment swiftly, within that very lifetime. Since developing firm concentration on the clarity of the mind lays the foundation for this accomplishment, gaining experience in it is essential.

Each class talk will consist of a teaching and guided meditation, with an opportunity to discuss one’s experiences and have one’s questions answered.

Each class includes a teaching and two guided meditations. Everyone is welcome.

October – November: Creating Happiness – The Law of Karma

5-week series
COST:  $15 per class, $60 per series (free for members)

When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often ask: Why me? But do we have an answer to that question? Do we feel unlucky? Do we feel that we’ve been dealt an unfair hand?

Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma give us a clear and practical explanation on why things happen the way they do, and how we can begin to change our experiences from negative to positive. Rather than seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Understanding karma puts us in the driver’s seat of our own life.

Join us to learn how to use the law of karma to change your experience of the present, heal the past, and create a more fortunate future.

December: Exchanging Self with Others

3-week series
COST:  $15 per class, $36 per series, free for members

“Since cherishing myself is the door to all faults
And cherishing mother beings is the foundation of all good qualities,
I seek your blessings to take as my essential practice
The yoga of exchanging self with others.”

These two verses summarize the actual practice of exchanging self with others. Buddhas have attained enlightenment by abandoning self-cherishing and by cherishing only others, and so they are able to work continuously for others. During this special set of December classes, you will receive teachings and be guided in meditations on the practice of Exchanging Self with Others. This yoga is one of the most important and practical of all of Buddha’s teachings.

By training our mind to be more aware of the happiness and well being of others, and by meditating on this precious mind, we have the ability to change the way we see and interact with others in our daily life and in our world.

December 1: Awakening the Heart
December 8: Exchanging Self With Others
December 15: Taking and Giving: Training in Compassion & Love
